Usage

Albendazole is categorized as an anthelmintic medicine. It’s used to treat neurocysticercosis, an infection that’s caused by tapeworm in pork (Taenia solium). Also, it resolves cystic echinococcosis, which is gotten from a tapeworm in dogs.

Neurocysticercosis contributes to the onset of acquired epilepsy, dementia, blindness, migraine, and meningitis. Cystic echinococcosis might cause cysts to grow in the liver. Albendazole prevents these infections by killing tapeworms in their larval stage.

Dosage & Administration

You will consume this drug one or two times daily. Make sure you eat a good meal before taking a dose. Your physician may prescribe another drug to suppress side effects during therapy. Ensure you follow the physician’s prescription for the specific infection you want to treat.

If consuming the tablet, chew or swallow it with enough water. Your symptoms may disappear but you shouldn’t discontinue the treatment unless a physician gives their consent. Skipping doses may cause your body to develop resistance to any infection that you’re trying to treat.

Dosage for Cystic Echinococcosis

Adults weighing below 132.28 lbs (60 kg) should consume 15 milligrams per body weight in two doses but not more than 800 milligrams daily.  Those weighing more should consume a maximum of 400 milligrams two times daily.

The treatment will last for four weeks after which the patient will abstain from drugs for two weeks. Cystic echinococcosis isn’t common in younger children and infants, but a consultant could prescribe a dose, using their weight, if it occurs.

Dosage for Neurocysticercosis

The dose for this infection is similar to that of cystic echinococcosis. However, the treatment lasts between eight to thirty days. In this case, Albendazole is combined with a steroid. Steroids can be administered intravenously or orally, within the first seven days, to prevent hypertensive encephalopathy

Dosage for Other Infections

  • Ascariasis, enterocolitis, and hookworm: 400 milligrams once
  • Filariasis: 400 milligrams twice for ten days
  • Pinworm: 400 milligrams once and repeated after 14 days
  • Whipworm: 400 milligrams once for three days
